Troy Deal gets 4 to 20

This is one of my favorite cases. Troy Deal is a pastor who like to hunt for young girls via the internet. Now he's going to prison.

Deal, 35, was found guilty April 18 of 11 counts of using a computer to solicit a child for sexually abusive material, distributing sexually abusive material and communicating with a child for immoral purposes.

I have no sympathy for this man. He is the worst sort of scum. A pastor who hunted children for sexual pleasure. May at least 2 of his four years be in the general population.

What ever happened to Richard Dehaan that was arrested at the sametime for the same crimes? Anyone know?

I know this is a few years late, but i just came across it today. I was in Troy's youth group for a few years, which makes it easy for me to say that there was much more to him than what the newspapers say. He was an incredible individual who did tons of good things for people. Yes, he made a mistake, but no one has the right to judge him just by reading and article in the newspaper. YOU DID NOT KNOW HIM. Troy never suggested anything innapropriate to me or any of the other youth group members. He taught me everything I needed to know about God, and I have him to thank for my strong Christian faith. I forgive him, and really wish people had more of an open mind. Unless you are perfect, you have no right to point fingers at him and say that he is a bad person. What you have done to attempt to make a difference in this world most likely does not even compare to what Troy did. He made a positive impact on my life, and many more, whether it was from helping people on a mission trip or teaching someone about God. Maybe you have different beliefs, but I know that God's love is unconditional, and that is the way I choose to live my life too.

Anonymous - a couple of points. First, fuck you. You don't me so don't compare me to a convicted pedophile. Second, I too knew a man you lead a youth group. He did not touch me, but he touched a few of my friends. On killed himself after many years of self abuse and guilt. Two others turned to drugs. The youth pastor/choir leader was a great man that did many wonderful things, but he is still pedophile... and no Christian.

Open mind... how foolish you must be.

I will say everyone makes mistakes...Everyone including you and me....But why is it your singling out just Christians....Why not everyone who ever screws up in life....the drunk who gets behind a wheel of a car and drives regardless if they get caught its still wrong....Troy never touched a kid but engaged in a conversation....How about the atheist who screws up his life and blames everyone else for his problem and starts shooting up a school....We dont focus on his belief instead we focus on his circumstance. Why is that you have to attack the faith of only Christians....ANd before you think I am religious, I'm not....I just dont understand you pointing your finger...I guess with that perspective if you think Hitler was bad then all German people are bad....Nice.

anon - this is one of 500 posts on clergy sexual abuse I call Hypocrisy Watch. I stated it because Christians like to point to atheists and say that we have no morals. I post these stories to rebut that assertion.

And which atheist was it that shot up the school? I don't seem to remember that one.

Not sure if anyone is paying attention to this string anymore, but I was compelled to comment... Anonymous, what you fail to understand is that all of the righteous deeds Troy Deal fulfilled in his life, only make his depraved deeds worse. I'm pleased that he helped lead you to your salvation, but his hypocrisy has lead far more people away from Christ. If he was just some random creep online asking to meet and tie up 14 year old girls in chat rooms, we all would have had far less ammunition. Instead, he exacerbated all the stereotypes that atheists have against religion and the institution of Christianity.

Additionally, you may be able to attest to his public facade, but don't pretend that you can testify to his darker side, which says far more about him.

I am a former youth in Troy's small groups and such. I agree that what he did was despicable and hypocritical to the worst degree. I also believe that his family is still trying to move from this incident. His wife just got remarried and they have two small children. I am asking you respectfully to take down some of these posts or at least comments. I understand that what he did was horrible and shouldn't be brushed under some rug or anything like that. I'm just wondering what happens when you search for your dad's name and this is the first thing that pops up. His children have suffered a lot and will continue to feel the effects of this for a long time. I'm just asking you to take this post down not for Troy or his reputation but for his family that was left behind.

Anon - the other guy that was arrested at the same time got Probation and he actually set up a time to meet with a person and showed up only to find police.

I dont want to hear you people defend him. I do not! This man, Troy is my FAMILY and it disgusts me. It totally does. I feel bad for his wife his kids and even his parents. I dont want to hear any one defend him and say what a great person he is or was. As his first cousin and someone who grew up with him every step of the way it still makes me sick. It's not up to me to judge him or condemn him.. but I wont let him around my daughter or my niece.
